Where will this course lead?

Aeronautical Engineering offers many fantastic career paths, including the design, manufacture and maintenance of aircraft.

Aircraft engineers maintain, inspect, repair and service aircraft to EASA international standards certifying their work with approved licenses to achieve high safety standards all over the world.

Specialising in either Mechanical and/or Avionics, qualified aircraft engineers work for airlines, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) divisions of aerospace manufacturers or specialist aircraft maintenance companies/airlines.

There are also military routes - whilst the General Aviation (GA) community, which spans a huge range of activities from Flying Clubs to Business jets (below 5700Kg) and airlines (above 5700Kg) also require qualified engineers to maintain their fleets.

Safety is crucially important to the aviation industry - flying is still the safest form of transport, and if you can offer attention to detail, excellent understanding of safety requirements and awareness of aircraft systems, good hand skills, communication and the ability to work as a team, often internationally, this career could be the route for you!

More and more aerospace manufacturers are also turning to the 'after sales' market and companies such as Rolls-Royce (engines) and Messier-Dowty (landing gear) also offer maintenance support following the sale of their components. Therefore there are likely to be good employment prospects for those taking the licensed engineer route.

After successfully completing this course, you could spend an additional year studying for the BTEC Extended Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering

Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace

Aircraft Maintenance Practices

How will this course be delivered?

The course includes both classroom theory and practical sessions in our well-equipped aerospace workshops.

What qualifications will I get?

Please note: For September 2017 all current BTEC qualifications are being revised and some content may change.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is mainly via course work and practical assignments.

How do I get a place on the course?

Places are offered after an interview for candidates who have/are expected to achieve the entry requirements.

What are the entry requirements?

Either 4 GCSE passes at grade A*/9 - C/4 to include Maths, English and preferably science; or a relevant Level 2 Diploma in Engineering at a Merit or Distinction grade (and a minimum of Grade C/4 in GCSE Maths and English). Also, an excellent reference or school report followed by a successful selection interview.

What else do I need to know?

You need to provide pens, paper, folders and a scientific calculator.

What can I do after this course?

You could progress to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering for another year (to have 3A- Level equivalents) or find an apprenticeship/employment.
