Where will this course lead?

If you are interested in Animal Management or if you think a career in the animal care industry is something you would love to be a part of, our Level 3 qualification will give you all the training you need in a number of animal management areas to fully equip you with all round knowledge of life in the workplace.

What will I study?

Throughout your studies, you will cover all 5 Units from the following list below:

- Animal Welfare and Ethics
- Animal Health and Diseases
- Practical Animal Husbandry
- Work Experience in the Animal Sector
- Animal Behaviour

How will this course be delivered?

You will spend three/four days per week in College and one additional day on an animal related work placement.

Learners who haven’t gained an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English and Maths will be required to attend these subjects throughout their study programme.

What qualifications will I get?

After completing year 1 you will achieve a Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Animal Management which is equivalent to one A-Level.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continual over the year mainly by the completion of assignments, but there are a range of assessment methods including: external assessments, presentations and group work and students are also assessed practically on the Animal Care Centre and in the work place.
You will be given the opportunity to gain a Pass, Merit or Distinction in each subject.

How do I get a place on the course?

You will need to complete your application and attend a College interview.

What are the entry requirements?

Four GCSE passes at Grade A*/9 - C/4 to include Science, English Language and Maths
OR
Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care in which a Merit grade or higher is expected.
In addition to either of the above you also require:
- A suitable character or tutor reference
- A copy of your latest school report (if applicable)
- A successful College interview

What else do I need to know?

You will need to purchase a pair of steel toe cap boots, College boiler suit and a work placement polo shirt. There may also be various trips throughout the year. The price of these will become available upon application.

A good standard of English and Maths are essential for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.

If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.

What can I do after this course?

On successful completion of this course, you will be offered an interview to progress onto a second year to complete a full Animal Management Diploma.
Success at this interview is dependent on a good standard of work, attendance and behaviour throughout the course and also on the conditions that you have maintained and completed the necessary hours in a suitable work placement.

Examples of careers available within the animal care industry which may be relevant to you on completion of this course include: the RSPCA, pet shops, kennels and catteries, trainee veterinary nurse, ranger or wildlife conservation work.
