Where will this course lead?

Adult care workers work in a variety of settings from residential homes, nursing homes, domiciliary care, day centres, some clinical settings and as a personal assistant. This course will ensure you have the personal skills and knowledge to deliver care and support which is tailored to the individuals needs whilst promoting best practice.

This will be the start of a career in care and can also provide ongoing continuing professional development.

What will I study?

Care certificate- this is a vocational component and will demonstrated through a portfolio of evidence.

Health and Social Care Diploma Level 2. This includes mandatory units such as safeguarding, duty of care and communication. Then there will be optional units selected relevant to the area of care currently working within.

When your employer and the college confirm that you have completed the care certificate, Care Diploma, sat the level two functional skills exams for English and Maths and you have collated testimonies from service users regarding your care you will be entered for the end-point assessment which includes:

Situational judgement test (multiple choice exercise based on real life scenarios)
Professional discussion

How will this course be delivered?

You will be required to attend one day a week for thirteen months at college.
You will be expected to undertake self-study and be able to evidence this.
You will be required to use an electronic portfolio system to collate your evidence.

What qualifications will I get?

Apprenticeship Standard for Adult Care Worker

Within this will be the care certificate and Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

How will I be assessed?

Combinations of methods are used to assess vocational competence and knowledge. Methods include work-based assessments, questions and answers, discussions, written work, e-evidence, observations and portfolio building.

How do I get a place on the course?

Employers can receive advice and support from the Employer Services team at Solihull College and University Centre.

What are the entry requirements?

You must have achieved level 1 Functional skill in Maths and English. You will also achieve a certificate programme with the college prior to enrolment onto an apprenticeship.
You will be in paid employment within the care sector in a suitable role.
You will have undertaken the Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service process within the workplace.
