Where will this course lead?

This course is for candidates who are currently employed in the health and fitness sector who wish to develop their knowledge and skills further and become a Fitness Instructor. Examples of current employment may be as a lifeguard or leisure assistant.

What will I study?

You will study the following: - Anatomy and Physiology, - Principles of Exercise and Fitness, - Planning, instructing, and evaluating a gym based exercise session, - Health, Safety, and Welfare in the Fitness Environment, - First Aid, - Functional Skills in English and Maths.

How will this course be delivered?

Attendance is based around current employment commitments - this will be discussed at interview, however some attendance at college will be required.

What qualifications will I get?

NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (QCF)

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed with a number of methods including: - Multiple choice exam papers - A portfolio of written gym plans - Observation of instructing skills in the work environment - A variety of coursework and oral assessments

How do I get a place on the course?

A compulsory College interview will be required upon completion of the application.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants MUST be employed in the health and fitness sector, GCSEs in Maths, English and Science at grade D/3 or above are desirable, Applicants should be undertaking gym based exercise on a regular basis (minimum 3 times per week), You will require a basic knowledge of exercises covering cardiovascular machines, fixed resistance machines, and free weights. Good communication skills are essential. Applicants must be 17 years old to join the course

What else do I need to know?

Successful applicants will be required to purchase course manuals and a polo shirt. The polo shirt is worn as uniform when in college. Successful applicants are also expected to provide appropriate exercise clothing to wear in the gym. Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes. If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades. If you have a Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. What can I do after this course?

You will be able to progress on to the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Exercise and Fitness. You will be able to study towards additional exercise and fitness qualifications to improve your teaching skills and employability options, e.g. Circuit Training, Studio Resistance.
