Where will this course lead?

If you are interested in working as a Motor Vehicle technician and look forward to the challenge of work, but want to keep learning in a practical way, then this course is for you.

An Advanced Apprenticeship is a way for you to acquire the skills required to become a fully-qualified technician. It provides the opportunity to get the qualifications and experience you will need for jobs of the future.

Apprenticeships also offer quality training to industry standards. They are designed by employers for employees - so you can be sure you are getting the skills the industry want.

You must be employed as the practical element is assessed at your workplace.

What will I study?

The course consists of work based learning and knowledge gained from attending college one-day a week. Some of the units include:

- Health & Safety in the Workplace
- Employer Rights and Responsibilities
- Vehicle Chassis Systems
- Vehicle Engines
- Vehicle Electrics and Electronics
- Pre & Post Inspections
- Service & Maintenance
- Transmission Systems

How will this course be delivered?

You will receive comprehensive training at work and attend College on a day-release. This will give you the opportunity to do real work, developing work-based skills that employers value, helping you to progress in your chosen career.

The College will provide an appointed work placement co-ordinator and assessor who will visit you in your workplace and support and assess how you are progressing. Some of these visits will provide you with evidence that you can use towards your qualification.

Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 2 Diploma

How will I be assessed?

Knowledge units:

- Projects/assignments, external assessments/tests and professional discussion

Performance units:

- Practical activities in the workplace or as appropriate in simulated conditions.

All Performance Units will be assessed and evidence referenced in a log book.

Apprenticeships are built around Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF), formerly National Vocational Qualifications (NVQSs). You will work towards a Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.

You will be assessed on your knowledge by on line tests, written tests and written assignments within the college and you will be assessed on practical tasks in the workplace; here you will gather evidence to prove that you can meet the required standards set by the industry.

How do I get a place on the course?

It is essential that all candidates are employed as a light vehicle technician within the industry.

It is highly recommended that all candidates have achieved a minimum Level 1 in numeracy, literacy and ICT (or equivalent).

You will need to attend a College interview and work interview.

What are the entry requirements?

You will be required to have a GCSEs grade 3/ D or above or an equivalent qualification in Maths and English. IT Entry is also subject to an initial assessment which will be carried out at Solihull College.

What else do I need to know?

Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes. If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades. What can I do after this course?

This qualification is accepted by the repair industry as the basic mechanic qualification and would be acceptable to gain employment.
