Where will this course lead?
The Access to FE course is suitable for you if you are between 16 and 19 years old, you have few or no formal qualifications, you are unsure about your educational or job path and would like to progress onto a further education course.
What will I study?
This is a one year full time programme. The course includes Functional Skills, as well as Personal Development and Vocational qualifications such as:
- Maths & English
- ICT
- Personal and Social Development including Healthy Living, Money Management, Career Progression
- Vocational studies where you will have a chance to experience studying in one of the following areas:
- Health and Care
- Art and Media
- Land Based Studies
- Business
- Sport and Public Services
- Hair and Beauty
- Retail and Hospitality
- ICT
- Construction
How will this course be delivered?
You will study up to a maximum of 16 hours per week over 4 days. Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary. Timetables will be given to all students during enrolment and induction week.
What qualifications will I get?
Certificate in Personal and Social Development (Entry 3) (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will include: course work, assignments, online tests, written exams. Some parts of the course will be assessed by course tutors and verified by an awarding body.
How do I get a place on the course?
You will need to attend an interview.
What are the entry requirements?
No specific qualifications are required to join the course however, we ask students to take part in an initial assessment to determine if you have the correct level of Maths and English skills.
You will also be asked for a reference.
If you have a Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application we can help with this too.
What else do I need to know?
The course is offered at both sites. An Access to FE course has been designed specifically for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students. They follow the same course but have a specific language input into English sessions by ESOL tutors.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
The course can lead to a variety of Level 1 vocational courses, to training or employment.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.
There may be additional costs for visits throughout the year but these will total no more than £25.
