Acting the Part to Appreciate Equality

An innovative approach to understanding equality and diversity issues has been created between Solihull College and Solihull NHS Care Trust. The College’s tailored training sessions use the services of actors to convey the importance of equality and diversity to Care Trust workers.
To meet an identified need, the College has designed a bespoke package for Solihull NHS Care Trust involving sessions using a forum theatre approach. The College uses actors and facilitators to develop an increased knowledge, understanding and appreciation of equality and diversity issues.
Martin Hudson, from Solihull College’s Employer Services Team, said:
“Equality and diversity issues can arise on a daily basis in the everyday life of a Care Trust employee, which is why the training had to be engaging, so it would sink in and have a long lasting effect.
This theatre style method works judging by the response we’ve received so far. In some cases the Care Trust workers are able to identify with the characters, but more importantly they are able to digest the salient point of the training session.”
Michelle Dunne, Equality and Diversity Manager at Solihull NHS Care Trust, said:
“The training has been very well received by our staff, this is demonstrated by the positive feedback we have had. Evaluation of equality and diversity training rarely generates responses such as - very interesting; engaging, fun; helps you to learn how to challenge in a respectful way and a must-attend training session.
“Using this innovative approach provides our staff with the skills and knowledge to challenge inequalities and to understand the benefits of diversity. I would thoroughly recommend this method to equality and diversity training.”
Alongside a range of NVQs and Apprenticeships, the College also provides the Trust with accredited short courses and bespoke training in the vital skills needed to operate effectively.
