Where will this course lead?
This course will cover the basic skills you require for working in the Animal Care sector. All the work covered by this qualification will be carried out under supervision by your employer and you are required to be in full time employment within the sector, for example, in a cattery, pet shop, rescue centre, dog groomers, zoo and wildlife centre.
What will I study?
The apprenticeship will cover
General animal husbandry
Handling and restraint
Customer care
First aid for animals
Establishing and maintaining accommodation
Health and Safety
Maths and English will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and will work towards a Level 1 qualification. You will also achieve a First Aid certificate.
How will this course be delivered?
You will be visited by your tutor/assessor in your workplace.
What qualifications will I get?
Diploma in Work-based Animal Care (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
The programme will be assessed within your work place via observation. You will also be assessed through coursework, written papers and oral questions.
How do I get a place on the course?
You will need to attend an interview.
What are the entry requirements?
Minimum qualifications for this course are
GCSE grades G and above
A successful interview
Mature students are welcomed.

What else do I need to know?
You must be allocated time to carry out any assessments which will be undertaken at the workplace.

What can I do after this course?
Providing you successfully complete the course you can go onto the Level 3 Apprenticeship
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will need to provide a pair of steel toe cap boots and purchase a college boiler suit. Price on application. There may be an opportunity to participate in occasional trips for which there will be an additional charge.
