Apprenticeships Explained
Apprenticeships are high-quality work-based training programmes for people who want to develop their future career prospects and study at the same time. With 240,000 apprentices working throughout the UK – apprenticeships are clearly in demand.
Apprenticeships not only equip you with the necessary transferrable skills that provide the perfect grounding for any career but also with the valuable qualifications that are recognised by employers.
Here at Solihull College all we require is enthusiasm, commitment and a professional attitude in order to be considered for one of apprenticeship programmes. If you are not currently in Full-Time education, then an apprenticeship could be for you.
There are no set entry requirements to apply for one of our apprenticeships schemes as they are based on practical skills, work experience and career ambitions rather than just academic achievement.
On completing your apprenticeship, the career prospects are endless – you could use your apprentice experience as a stepping stone onto an advanced apprenticeship scheme, go on to University or progress up to the next level in your employment.
The Apprenticeship Framework consists of the following qualifications:
NVQ (National Vocational Qualification): The NVQ is a programme of work based assessments and work place observations that build a portfolio of evidence and demonstrates the learner’s level of job related competences.
Key Skills: Key Skills are a range of essential skills that support success in education, employment, lifelong learning and personal development. The learner presents evidence within a portfolio. In most cases end tests are also taken in supervised timed sessions to complete the qualification. Subjects include Communication, Application of Number, Information Technology, Working With Others, Problem Solving and Improving Own Learning.
Technical Certificates: These are qualifications which provide the underpinning knowledge and understanding required of the NVQ to be delivered through a taught programme. The methods of assessment consist of case study work, set projects or assignments and end tests.
Funding
Our Apprenticeships are funded by the Birmingham and Solihull Learning and Skills Council. There is no course cost for you or your employer; however contributions may be required for various clothing/equipment if necessary.
Finance
Employed Apprentices will be paid a wage by the company they are employed by. Learners on the trainee programme may be eligible for Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). EMA is organised through our Student Finance department and further details can be requested.
