Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you would like to consolidate your counselling skills and knowledge in a helping context, whether as part of an existing role or as a preparation for professional counselling training.
What will I study?
The course contains the following units:
Developing and practising counselling skills
Understanding different approaches to the use of counselling skills
Working ethically in helping relationships
Understanding the importance of self-development in relation to helping others
How will this course be delivered?
This one year course runs on Thursdays 1-4pm or 6-9pm
What qualifications will I get?
Award in Counselling Skills and Theory (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on completion of a portfolio of evidence consisting of weekly homework questions, your on-going reflective journal and records of skills practice as well as an externally set and assessed assignment
In order to pass the course you must be successful in both, as well as achieving a minimum of 80% attendance.
How do I get a place on the course?
You may enrol after submitting an application form , attending an interview/information session and on receipt of an offer letter.
What are the entry requirements?
You should:
have successfully completed a skills based introductory level course (30 - 40 hours) within the past three years
or
be able to supply evidence of equivalent training or experience
Have the ability to listen empathically
preferably be aged 21+
We strongly discourage partners and persons in close relationships from attending the same course.
Counselling skills practice requires considerable mental stamina and self-awareness. This training course is not designed for personal therapy. We would not recommend anyone to undertake counselling courses within two years of experiencing major personal difficulties.
What else do I need to know?
It is an essential that applicants have suitable opportunity in which to practice their skills whether in paid employment, as a volunteer with a local agency or with their colleagues. The course tutor will be able to offer advice on this at interview.
This qualification does not offer a licence to practice as a counsellor

What can I do after this course?
The course is designed both to enhance your counselling skills and as an essential underpinning for further study to become a professional counsellor. If you wish to pursue professional training you will need to study at diploma level or on a Foundation Degree

The course textbooks are Counselling Skills for Dummies by Gail Evans, published by Wiley and Next Steps in Counselling by Pete Sanders, Paul Wilkins and Alan Frankland published by PCCS Books.
