Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you are 16 - 19 and want to take the first steps towards working with computers, for example in an office.
Students successfully completing our level 1 course may progress to levels 2 and 3, then eventually on to university. This could lead to a career in IT such as a software designer or an IT Technician.
What will I study?
Use of Microsoft Office
Website Design
Manipulating images, sound and video
Researching and using the Internet
Changing desktop settings for a specific user
Skills for employment
Money management
Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
Students will carry out practical work using computers in the majority of lessons. Other lessons will involve group, written and research work.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC Level 1 Diploma for IT Users
How will I be assessed?
To pass this qualification you will work on a number of practical assignments and also produce course work for each unit. You will be tested for English, Maths and ICT Functional Skills.
How do I get a place on the course?
For external applicants, at least two GCSEs are preferred, with a Grade of E in English and one other subject and a tutor reference, followed by a successful interview process.
Internal applicants will need to have successfully completed their course and provide a good Personal Tutor reference, followed by a successful interview process.
If you have a Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application we can help with this too.

You need to bring pen, notebooks and folders to every lesson. It is expected that you will bring a memory stick to save and back up your work.
You will be required to contribute to educational visits.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
The majority of our students who are successful on this course will be able to continue studying at level 2 in IT, business or a number of other qualifications. Some students may go on to work.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
Headphones will be used in a number of our units and students may prefer to bring their own. It would also be useful for students to buy a memory stick on which to save and back up their work.
Educational trips are part of our course and students will be expected to contribute towards them, this must be paid at enrolment.
