Where will this course lead?
This course is an ideal first step if you think a career in child care is for you. In order for you be able to practice in the workplace you will need to progress to level 2.
What will I study?
You will study all aspects of caring for children and reflect on your personal development. Your course will cover:
- Personal and Social Development
- Communication Skills with Children
- Planning for the Physical and Emotional Care Needs of Children
- Keeping Children Safe
- Children's Learning Through Everyday Experiences
- Creative Activities for Young Children
- Books, Stories, Poems and Rhymes for children
Maths and English will also be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and will work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
This course is college based with a work experience opportunity in term 3. You will be in college for 3 days per week. This course is available at Blossomfield Campus only.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC Diploma in Caring for Children (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will complete a portfolio of work. A variety of methods are used to assess your progress including: Individual & group presentations, case studies, assignments, projects, work based assignments, developing learning resources, and display work.
Assessment is via practical assignments, course work and external exams in English and Maths.
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interview depending on your predicted grades and a good reference from your current tutor. You may also be tested for your English and Maths skills.
What are the entry requirements?
GCSE English, a good standard of written and spoken English is essential.
You will have a positive school reference with good levels of attendance and punctuality. Experience of working with children e.g. babysitting or nursery experience would be very useful and a successful interview

What else do I need to know?
All students working with children will need to have an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check; this may affect your application. Please discuss this with your interviewing tutor.
You need to bring pen, notebooks and folders to every lesson. It is expected that you will bring a memory stick to save and back up your work.
Educational trips are part of our course and students will be expected to contribute towards them. This must be paid at enrolment.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
If you are successful on this course, you will be able to continue studying towards Level 2 in Children's Care, Learning and Development, either as an apprentice or on a full time BTEC Level 2 Diploma (subject to the entry criteria)
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.
You will also need to provide costs for text books, trips during the course and a polo shirt for work placement. You should allow £60-70 to cover these costs and £60 for your Criminal Records Bureau check
