Where will this course lead?
If you are planning to work with children in a variety of different early years services, for example day care, nursery, crche, out of school care and schools this is the course for you.
This qualification will enable you to work, supervised, with children and their families in a variety of settings e.g. day care or nurseries.
What will I study?
You will study all aspects of caring for children and reflect on your personal development. Your course will cover:
Human Growth and Development
Policy, practice and law
Child health
Care of Children
Play and Practical Activities
Food and Nutrition
Health and Safety Practices
You will be given the opportunity to work with children in a range of placements in schools and nurseries.
In college you will study the development of children from birth to sixteen years of age and explore working as a professional within these age ranges, allowing you to relate your learning to practice.
Maths and English will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and will work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
This course is college based with a work experience. You will be in college for 3 days per week and assessed work practice 2 days per week.
What qualifications will I get?
Diploma for Children's Care, Learning and Development (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will complete a portfolio of work. A variety of methods are used to assess your progress including: Individual & group presentations, Case Studies, Assignments, Projects, work based Assignments, developing learning resources, and display work
Assessment is via practical assignments, course work and external exams in English, maths and IT
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interview depending on your predicted grades and a good reference from your current tutor. You may also be tested for your English and Maths skills. (You need to be aged between 16 -18)
What are the entry requirements?
You will need the minimum of 2 G.C.S.E s at grade D or above, including English and one other academic subject or level 1 Foundation Diploma and English Level 1 Functional Skills
You will have a positive school or college reference with good levels of attendance and punctuality. Experience of working with children e.g. babysitting or nursery experience would be very useful and a successful interview

What else do I need to know?
All students working with children will need to have an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check; this may affect your application. Please discuss this with your interviewing tutor
You need to bring pen, notebooks and folders to every lesson. It is expected that you will bring a memory stick to save and back up your work.
Educational trips are part of our course and students will be expected to contribute towards them, this must be paid at enrolment.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
If you are successful on this course, you will be able to continue studying towards level 3 in Children's Play Learning and Development either as an apprentice or on a full time Extended Diploma (subject to the entry criteria)
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.
You will also need to provide costs for text books, trips during the course and a polo shirt for work placement. You should allow £60-70 to cover these costs and £60 for your Criminal Records Bureau check
