Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you are interested in developing your knowledge and understanding of art & design and want to pursue a career in the arts.
What will I study?
Art history and theory - through research and gallery visits
Drawing development
Exploring materials and techniques i.e. printmaking, painting, sculpture
Photography/Digital Imaging
Presentation skills
Generating and developing ideas in art and design
Exploring moving image
You will produce project work in the first year that covers all these areas, with additional sessions studying observational and figure drawing and art & design history.
The second year goes into more depth in all of the briefs you are assigned, but you will have more freedom to specialise in the area you wish to progress into through Pathway and Final Major Projects.
How will this course be delivered?
The course is made up of a number of different projects that target the units required. Some elements of the course are taught separately through weekly classes whilst the majority of the learning takes place in the studio.
What qualifications will I get?
Extended Diploma in Art and Design (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will have to produce a portfolio of work through the completion of set projects.
How do I get a place on the course?
You must complete an application form and attend and interview to determine your suitability for the subject and level. At interview you will be required to show portfolio of art work you have completed at school as well as doing a drawing test at the interview.

What are the entry requirements?
At least four GCSEs at grade C or above (Art is essential and English Language is preferred) or a BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design at Merit grade or above. All students will undertake a six week introductory/diagnostic course prior to progressing on to the Extended Diploma. Successful college interview. A portfolio of work.
What else do I need to know?
At the start of the course trips to galleries take place on a weekly basis. As the course progresses these become less frequent as students are expected to visit galleries independently. There will be some payment required to cover the costs of these trips.
There is normally the opportunity to take part on a trip overseas which is usually within mainland Europe.

What can I do after this course?
Progression from this course is normally into higher education on to an HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons in Fine Art or a related subject. This could lead to careers in design for Fine Art practice, museum/exhibition work, illustration, and teaching.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
There is a starter kit of essential materials, sketchbooks and a portfolio that all students are expected to purchase at the start of the course. Throughout the course you will need to pay for paper, sketchbooks, and photographic film / paper as well as replacement materials for your kit.
Having your own digital camera is not essential but would be advantageous.
