Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you would like to work with children in a variety of different early years services, for example, Children's Centre worker, Nursery Nurse, Private Nanny, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Manager, Lead practitioner, Childminder or to access higher education programmes such as teaching (QTS), Early Years Professional (EYPS), nursing, social work .

Play and Learning in the Early Years
Human Growth & Development
Promoting a healthy environment for children
Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
This course is college based with a work experience. You will be in college for 3 days per week and work practice 2 days per week
What qualifications will I get?
Vocational study not leading to a recognised qualification, Education and Training (SSA 13)
How will I be assessed?
Classroom based study and assessment is via assignments and course work. In addition you will need to pass your professional practice unit which comprises. 800 hours of assessed work practice with children in following ranges 0 -1 year, 2-4 years and 4-7 years in Nursery, School and Special Needs
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interview depending on your predicted grades and a good reference from your current tutor. You may also be tested for your English and Maths skills.
What are the entry requirements?
Four GCSEs at Grade C or above (to include English and Maths or English and Science) plus three other academic subjects. (You must be aged between 16 and 19 to enrol on this course)
You will have a positive school or college reference with good levels of attendance and punctuality. Experience of working with children e.g. babysitting or nursery experience would be very useful.
If you have a Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application we can help with this too.
What else do I need to know?
All students working with children will need to have an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check; this may affect your application. Please discuss this with your interviewing tutor.
You need to bring pen, notebooks and folders to every lesson. It is expected that you will bring a memory stick to save and back up your work.
Educational trips are part of our course and students will be expected to contribute towards them, this must be paid at enrolment.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
You may progress to Higher Education, including our HND in Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families, or to degree programmes such as teaching (QTS*), Early Year Childhood Studies*, nursing, social work.
If you chose to have a break before continuing your studies you may choose to go to work as:
Children's Centre worker, Nursery Nurse, Private Nanny, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Children's Health Care assistant or as a Childminder.
*If you wish to progress to Initial Teacher Training you must have Mathematics, English and a science subject at GCSE Grade C or above
If you wish to undertake Early years Professional Status you must have English and Maths GCSE grade C or above
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.
You will also need to provide costs for text books, a polo shirt for work placement and trips during the course. You should allow £120 to cover these costs and £60 for your Criminal Records Bureau check
