Introduction
- The course is suitable for anyone (16-19) who is keen to develop a career in Graphic Design or a related area and wishes to prepare for a higher education/university course in the area of Graphic Design Studying on the National Diploma in Graphic Design will lead you onto University level study preparing you for careers in design for print, advertising, web page design, publicity design, interactive media, illustration, and teaching, The National Diploma develops skills in research, drawing , layout , typography, computer aided art and design, design history
What will be covered in the course?
- The course is a 2 years full time that can lead onto jobs in the industry, or a place in higher education. Graphics is a vocational art & design based subject, so the projects are all realistic and industry based and the team all have recent industry experience. Graphic Design is a broad area that covers corporate identity and branding, advertising, illustration, both manual and computer based, animation, traditional cell animation and contemporary broadcast animation, packaging, typography and editorial design. On the course, we explore the development of drawing skills, contextual studies, ideas, and learning a wide range of skills to enable students to have a broad portfolio at the end of the course. Units are as follows: Year one Visual Recording in Art & Design Materials, Techniques & Processes Ideas & Concepts Visual Communication Contextual Influences in Art & Design Computers in Art & Design Type & Letterforms Graphic Image Making Information Graphics Year two Application, Exploration & Realisation in Art & Design Professional Practise Image Manipulation Computer Applications Typographic Design Words & Images in Art & Design Graphics Media, Techniques & Technology Design for Advertising Narrative Image Making

Entry Requirements
At least four GCSE's at grade C or above (Art, Maths and English preferred) or a BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design at Merit grade or above. All students will undertake a six week introductory/diagnostic course prior to progressing on to the National Diploma. Successful college interview. A portfolio of work.
What qualification(s) can be gained?
National Diploma in Graphic Design.
How is the course assessed?
Work is internally assessed and verified and then externally examined and moderated.
Additional costs
- You will need to provide all basic drawing and painting materials and equipment; this is normally purchased from us as a basic kit at the beginning of the year. Paper is normally bought on a day to day basis from the Art & Design shop. You will also need to provide any additional stationary which is required for your course.
Attendance and additional study hours
- You will study up to a maximum of 20 hours per week over a maximum of 4 days. Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary. Timetables will be given to all students during enrolment and induction week.
Further information
An Interview is required to join this course. This course is two years full-time Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
Next steps
Progression from this course is normally into higher education on to an HND, Foundation Degree or BA Hons in Graphic Design or a related subject. This could lead to careers in design for print, advertising, web page design, publicity design, interactive media, illustration, and teaching.
