Introduction
- If you are already working with children in a variety of different early years services, for example, Children's Centre worker, Nursery Nurse, Private Nanny, Lead practitioner, Childminder or aiming to access higher education programmes such as teaching (QTS), Early Years Professional (EYPS), nursing, social work this is the course for you. This programme is designed to provide you with the appropriate education and training to enable you to work unsupervised or in a supervisory capacity with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the sector of Children's Services This wide ranging course draws on education, as well as subjects such as the theory, policy and practice in educational psychology, sociology, child health and law. This two-year programme combines college-based study with assessed work based practice, allowing you to relate theory to practice. This combination of assessed practice and theoretical knowledge will prepare you for progression to the Foundation Degree in early years Services.
What will be covered in the course?
- You will need to achieve 65 credits to complete this award which consists of mandatory units, pathway units and optional units chosen to meet your individual needs and interests You will need to complete 11 Core mandatory units (27 Credits) Early Learning and Childcare pathway, Learners taking this pathway will need to complete a further 5 mandatory units (22 Credits) Social Care pathway, Learners taking this pathway will need to complete a further 3 mandatory units (13 Credits) Learning and Development Support Services pathway, Learners taking this pathway will need to complete a further 3 mandatory units Total credit value: 13 You will then need to choose from a bank of optional units to achieve a minimum of 65 credits Examples of Mandatory units: Promote Communication, Promote Equality & Inclusion in Children's and Young People's Settings, Engage in Personal Development, Principles for Implementing Duty of Care, Safeguarding Children and Young People, Develop positive relationships with children, young people and others involved in their care

Entry Requirements
Paid employment in the sector for a minimum of 16 hours per week. English and Maths GCSE grade C or Level 2 and a good general education
What qualification(s) can be gained?
CACHE Diploma in Work in the Children and Young people's Workforce level 3. First Aid Certificate Key skills in Communication and Application of Number both level 2, CWDC Induction standards
How is the course assessed?
The knowledge aspect of the programme is assessed by course tutors, your work practice is assessed by our qualified assessors in the workplace. The qualification quality is verified by the awarding body

- Examination Fee: £106.00
Additional costs
- You will be need to provide all basic stationary including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.
Attendance and additional study hours
- Study Hours - Part time Class times - 6.00 - 9.00pm Days - Mon Blossomfield campus / Wed Woodlands campus You will require a minimum of 16 hours paid employment.
Further information
An Interview is required to join this course. For the Apprenticeship, students require suitable paid employment with young children (minimum of 16 hours each week). Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
