Where will this course lead?
This course is for dog enthusiasts who want to learn more about our canine companions - for personal interest or for work. It provides opportunities for you and your dog to learn together in and out of the classroom. The course supports the Kennel Club Accreditation Scheme for Instructors in Dog Training and Canine Behaviour.
What will I study?
There are three units - you can complete one, two or all three units. Each unit runs for 9 weeks.
Unit 1: Canine Behaviour (September - December) Origins and history of the dog and the effects of human selection. The role of dogs in society. Drives and breed differences. Canine social structure and communication. Understanding mental health and stress.
Unit 2: Canine Health and Welfare (January - March) Health and illness. First aid. Preventative health care. Grooming and nutrition
Unit 3 Teaching Dogs (April - June) How dogs learn. Planning reward-based training sessions. Evaluating teaching and learning. Practical training
How will this course be delivered?
Lessons will involve lectures, discussions, group work and practicals.
What qualifications will I get?
Vocational study not leading to a recognised qualification, Science and Mathematics (SSA 2)
How will I be assessed?
There are a variety of written and practical assignments to be completed each term there are no exams.
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interviews only. These can be done by telephone.
What are the entry requirements?
own dog or access to another dog which you can train on a regular basis.

What else do I need to know?
This class runs on Thursday evenings at the Blossomfield Campus. You should allow about 3 hours per week for private study and each unit is completed in one term - you can complete 1, 2 or 3 units.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
Past students of this course have used the skills acquired to help them run dog training classes, grooming businesses and to help at local dog training clubs. Further courses include higher education courses in canine behaviour or specialisms such as grooming.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
There is a small fee if you wish to receive OCN accreditation for your work.
