Part Time
Course Details
Course Code
QED4TT57/BCP0
Course Level
Level 5
Where will this course lead?
Teaching English to speakers of other languages can be a highly rewarding career, offering you the chance to live and work abroad. You will need an internationally recognised teaching qualification, and CELTA - highly regarded throughout the world - gives you the skills you need and will make it easier to get a teaching job anywhere. CELTA is an initial qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience and opens up a whole world of exciting teaching opportunities.
What will I study?
There are six main units of learning: Language awareness; The learner, the teacher and the teaching/learning context; Planning for effective teaching of adult learners of English; Classroom management and teaching skills for teaching English to adults; Resources and materials for teaching English to adults; Professional development for teachers of English to adults.
Course aims: The course enables candidates to acquire essential subject knowledge and familiarity with the principles of effective teaching, acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners, and apply your learning in a real teaching context. You will undertake a total of 6 hours of teaching practice as part of the course.
How will this course be delivered?
10 weeks part-time, or 4 weeks for the intensive option. Please refer to the information pack for more details, or contact us on 0121 678 7294/5 or email community@solihull.ac.uk
What qualifications will I get?
Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course. There are three components of assessment:
Teaching Practice - You will teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the six hours.
Written Assignments - you will complete four written assignments; two on teaching and learning English at adult level; one on the language system of English; and one on classroom teaching.
Professional Development - This component assesses your overall performance on the course.
To be awarded the Certificate, you must pass all three components. There are three grades - Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'.
How do I get a place on the course?
You must complete the CELTA application pack and pass an interview. Contact us on 0121 678 7294/5 or email community@solihull.ac.uk to receive your application and information pack.
What are the entry requirements?
You must be aged 19 or over.
Ideally you should have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education and have a standard of English which will enable you to teach at a range of levels.
You may still be eligible, even if you do not have formal qualifications at this level if you can demonstrate that you would be likely to complete the course successfully.
To apply, you will need to complete the CELTA application pack, which can be downloaded through the Teacher Training section of the college website, or requested via emailing community@solihull.ac.uk or phoning 0121 678 7295.
