Course Details
Course Code

Course Level
Level 4
Where will this course lead?
This course is aimed at those who are employed to teach or train adults as part of their job role. The Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) is ideal for new teachers/assistants/assessors who have some experience but whose teaching role does not include curriculum design. Teaching may include working with groups or one to one teaching.
The course provides progression from the Preparation to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Level 3 and Level 4), but the PTLLS is incorporated into the course so you do not need to have completed this qualification before enrolling on the CTLLS.
What will I study?
The CTLLS Award is comprised of four units: Preparation to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, Planning and Enabling Learning, Principles and Practice of Assessment and Equality and Diversity.
How will this course be delivered?
The course consists of classroom-based learning, 1:1 tutorial support and observation of your teaching practice. You will have the opportunity to explore key educational theories and to link these to your own practice. Your tutor will give you individual support with your assignments and will give you detailed oral and written feedback on your observed teaching. You will also have the chance to practice your presentation skills.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be by assignments and observation of teaching performance.
You will need to complete a Teaching Practice File, 4 written assignments, a seminar presentation and a Learning Journal. In addition your teaching will be observed by your tutor and by your mentor.
If you have done previous courses or qualifications which could be accredited (e.g. PTLLS, CGLI 7407 Stage One or CGLI 7302), you will have an Accreditation of Prior Learning interview with your tutor to identify what evidence can be carried forward.
How do I get a place on the course?
You will need to have an interview before joining the course
What are the entry requirements?
You will need to have 30 hours of teaching practice, working with groups or in a one to one context.
Teachers are expected to have at least a Level 3 Qualification in their subject teaching area and you will need to show evidence of this or have appropriate experience and be working towards a Level 3 Qualification.
You should also have English and Maths qualifications at Level 2 or be willing to work towards these qualifications.
If you have a Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application we can help with this too.
What else do I need to know?
You will need to have a subject specialist mentor in the workplace who can observe your teaching.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, Level 5, or a University Certificate in Education.
Career options : Completion of the course enables you to meet the minimum requirement for those employed as a teacher or trainer in Further Education colleges, Adult Education centres or Work-Based learning. To obtain QTLS and become fully qualified as a teacher, you need to provide evidence that teaching is your main employment activity and that you teach a range of classes and levels prior to enrolment on a DTLLS course (Cert Ed).
