Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you would like to work with children in a variety of different early years' services as an assistant preschool worker, assistant in children's centres, assistant in day nurseries, nursery schools and nursery classes in primary schools
What will I study?
You will study all aspects of children's care learning and development
Promote communication
Promote equality and
Engage in personal development
Principles for implementing duty of care
Understand and promote child and young person development
Understand how to safeguard the well being of children and young people
Support children and young people's health and safety
Develop positive relationships with children and others involved in their care
Working together for the benefit of children and young people
Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people
Context and principles for early years' provision
Promote learning and development in the early years
Promote children's welfare and well being in the early years
Professional practice in early years settings
Support children's speech, language and communication
Plus a range of optional units
Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
3 hours College based study a week, plus minimum of 2 days placement or employment in a relevant setting. You will need to complete assignments and research outside of the college study time; you will need to set aside at least an additional 3 hours of private study per week.
What qualifications will I get?
Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
The course will be assessed by a combination of work based assessment and assignment course work. You will construct a portfolio which will be marked by your college tutors and assessors. All work is then verified externally by EDEXCEL
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interview depending on your English and maths grades and a successful interview.
You may also be tested for your English and Maths skills.
What are the entry requirements?
GCSE English and Maths or equivalent (Minimum D grade or level 1)
If you have a Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application we can help with this too.
What else do I need to know?
All students working with children will need to have an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check; this may affect your application. Please discuss this with your interviewing tutor
You need to bring pen, notebooks and folders to every lesson. It is expected that you will bring a memory stick to save and back up your work.
Educational trips may be part of our course and students will be expected to contribute towards them.

What can I do after this course?
Additional units are available for professional development, if you wish to expand your portfolio of specialism. You may progress to Higher Education, including our HND in Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families, or to degree programmes such as Foundation Degree in Foundation Degree in Early Years Bachelor of Education Degree (teaching Qualified Teacher Status) You will need to meet all the requirements for these options, please check the individual course leaflets
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You must be registered with the Independent Safeguarding Authority and complete a Criminal records Bureau Check. There is a cost of £60.
You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.
