Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for those who are just learning the basics of computing. There is a clear progression route onto ECDL Level 1 and 2, a qualification recognised by employers.
What will I study?
You will cover:
Starting and shutting down an online IT system or application appropriately
Setting and using passwords where
E-safety
Searching the Internet
Selecting and using information from the Internet
Open, reading and replying to e-mails
Creating and sending emails
Entering and editing text
Good reading skills will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills, as well as progressing to a Level 1 ECDL. The college also offers Adult Numeracy and Literacy.
How will this course be delivered?
This is a five week course running on a Friday between 10am and 12pm. This is a one unit introductory course with a single assessment at the end of the course. You will be taught in a classroom by a qualified teacher.
What qualifications will I get?
Award in Online Basics (Start IT - iTQ) (Entry 3) (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will have to complete an assessment at the end of your five weeks. You will then have the opportunity to sign up for an ECDL course.
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered after a short interview, and a short English and IT test to check you are suitable for this course.
What are the entry requirements?
Must have basic English reading and writing skills and be willing to attend for five weeks on a Friday.
What else do I need to know?
As stated above, attendance on the course is critical and compulsory. Any missed attendance will increase the chances of not achieving. If interested, make an enquiry to Admissions on 0121 678 7000.

What can I do after this course?
As stated above, the course offers a pathway to a Level 1 ECDL, or a City and Guilds qualification. This in turn leads to the full ECDL qualification which is recognised by all employers.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
Students are advised to purchase a USB memory stick to save work on, which can be found at any supermarket or electrical shop. Students may also find the use of headphones helpful.
