Engineering design and draughtspersons produce designs and drawings for structures, piping, electrical systems, control and instrumentation systems and mechanical components used in industrial and commercial construction.
Typically, jobholders work in a wide range of industries of national importance including power and water infrastructure, petrochemical, oil and gas, nuclear, food and drink processing.
Jobholders are based at office locations within project design teams and occasionally work at on-site locations. They are required to understand on-site hazards and health and safety requirements.
The jobholder must
- Understand technical drawings and specifications and be able to create their own;
- Identify factors likely to affect design decisions;
- Produce CAD (computer aided design) models and engineering drawings and;
- Be able to communicate design information to internal and external parties.
This apprenticeship is formed of two main assessment methods, a gateway process and a final end point assessment.
The technical certificate, studied by attending college one day per week for two years. It is called a Level 3 Diploma in engineering. Whilst studying for this qualification, the units you may study include:
- Engineering Drawing
- Engineering Design
- Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
- Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
- Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
You will also need to complete a level 3 vocational diploma relevant to your job role.
When your employer and the college confirm that you have completed the required studies, you will be entered for an end-point assessment which includes:
- Knowledge Test
- Practical Test
- Structured Interview
These courses are delivered through classroom teaching, practical workshops and computer based workshops.
You will have the opportunity to complete practical workshops, develop CAD skills within our Advanced Manufacturing Centre, programme robots and automation systems and model hydraulic systems.
You will also be allocated an assessor who will visit you in the workplace to support the development of the vocational qualification.
Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard: Engineering Design and Draughtsperson
This standard has been designed to meet the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech). Registration is subject to candidates successfully completing the appropriate learning, developing the appropriate competence, and undergoing professional review.
The subject units are assessed in a variety of ways; some are assessed by assignments which may involve working in groups or independently and marked by your teachers using awarding body Criteria.
Some assignments are assessed whilst undertaking practical activities or by completing written assignments
Other modules or qualifications may be assessed using externally marked exams.

The desirable entry qualifications for a level 3 apprenticeship standard are 4 GCSE at grade C/4 or above including Maths and English. However, exceptional candidates or those with experience in engineering can be considered on a case by case basis.

The apprentices are expected to provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You could progress onto a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship at the college in a relevant vocational pathway following these studies.
