Where will this course lead?

This pre-apprenticeship programme is designed to equip you with the practical skills and knowledge needed to enter the engineering industry.

What will I study?

During the course you will study the following: - Health and Safety - Carrying out engineering activities effectively and efficiently - Using and communicating technical information - Making components using hand fitting techniques - Using lathes for turning operations.

How will this course be delivered?

Half of this course involves practical assessments in the engineering workshop and the other half is theory portfolio work in the classroom.

What qualifications will I get?

Level 1 Certificate in Engineering.

How will I be assessed?

To pass this course you will complete: - Unit 101 which is a theory based unit followed by an on line exam – Unit 102 Carrying out basic bench fitting techniques, which is a practical workshop based assessment, followed by a written question paper - Unit 104 Carrying out basic turning techniques, which is a practical workshop based assessment followed by a written question paper.

How do I get a place on the course?

Places are offered by interview.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for entry to this course, although an interest in working in the engineering industry is desirable

What else do I need to know?

If you are successful at the interview you will be expected to bring the following Personal Protective Equipment: - Safety footwear - Safety overalls are provided for workshop activities. You will also be expected to bring your own writing equipment. Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes. If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.
