Study Mode: Full Time
Course Code: MEDAA093BCF0
Course Level: Level 3
This is an ideal course if you are interested in making and studying films, researching and analysing the media and developing practical, communication and presentation skills. Many of our students progress to study media production or related courses at university or to go into employment within the film-making and digital media sectors. We have had students complete work experience and then gain full time employment at local companies such as Maverick Television and the BBC.
You will be studying 6 units in the first year of a wider 2 year programme, 2 of which will be externally assessed either by an exam or externally assessed coursework. All units will focus on areas of media and film theory and digital film production.
Examples of Units and projects you will be studying in the first year are:
- Media Representations
- Fiction Film Production
- Factual Film Production
- Pre-production Portfolio
The course will be delivered on site, with the opportunity for you to go off-site to film projects. You will be expected to undertake research and homework outside of class time, and you may need to use the editing suites outside of class time.
By completing the first year you will achieve a Foundation Diploma in Creative Media Digital production. Depending on your results from the Foundation Diploma, there will be the opportunity to progress to the second year qualification (National Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media Production).
For the first year of the course (Foundation Diploma), you must complete 6 units, 4 of which are mandatory. These complete units are equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels.
41% of the assessment for the year will be external.
Places on the course are offered by interview initially. You will also be expected to attend a Taster Day in late June, where you will have the opportunity to work on a small scale assignment that in some way relates to a creative media concept or production.
To apply for a place on this highly popular course, you need to hold at least 5 GCSE's including English Language at a grade 'C/4' or above. You should have an interest in the Media, be able to work in a team as well as stick to tight deadlines and schedules.
You will need to bring evidence of your original certificates at Induction.
You should be passionate about film-making and learning more about this exciting industry and art form.
Although a Media Studies GCSE is preferable, it is not essential, although some previous media experience and enthusiasm for the subject is essential.
If you have a Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application we can help with this too.
If you are successful on this course, you will be able to continue studying on Level 4 or above (HND, BA or BSc) courses at University or internally here at Solihull College.
You will leave the course with a range of skills desirable to employers, such as digital media production skills, communication and analysis skills, report writing, working to deadline and working with others.
Previous students are currently working for the BBC, Sky Sports, Maverick Television, Birmingham Eastside Newspaper and RockStar games, amongst many others.
