This qualification is designed to cover the skills and knowledge of a wide variety of engineering maintenance activities. It also includes level 2 Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) units to provide essential basic engineering training for apprentices in England and Wales.
Successful learners will:
- Develop skills and competencies relating to their specific role
- Meet the competence requirements of the engineering maintenance industry for apprentices at level 3 for the maintenance engineering pathway
- Achieve a recognised qualification to support their progress to further learning in higher education and greater responsibility in the workplace.
There is a Technical Certificate element requiring part time study at college for a Subsidiary Diploma or full Diploma in Engineering, with subjects such as
- Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
- Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
- Engineering Principles
- Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
In addition to the part time day release study for the technical certificate, apprentices will be assessed for competence against industry performance criteria in pursuit of an NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma. This will be assessed in the workplace by a qualified and experienced Engineering Assessor with the minimum impact on the day to day work of the employer and apprentice.

The Knowledge qualifications will be assessed through satisfactory performance in Assignments and Exams. The Performance qualifications will be assessed through the collection of valid evidence in a portfolio.
Employers can receive advice and support from the Employer Services team at Solihull College and University Centre.
The desirable entry qualifications for an advanced apprenticeship are 4 GCSE at grade C/4 or above including Maths and English. However, exceptional candidates or those with experience in engineering can be considered on a case by case basis.

Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to enrol an apprentice?
The apprentices are expected to provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
