Where will this course lead?

This Level 2 course is designed to get you trained to work towards careers are vast from retail, arboriculture, grounds maintenance, garden designer, hard landscaper, plant researcher, plant grower, sports turf and greenkeeping.

Whilst at College you will be working in a very pleasant walled garden, new classrooms and a purpose built barn where students can work regardless of the weather.

What will I study?

This course will cover:

- Industrial Experience
- Use & Maintenance of Horticulture Equipment & Machines
- Horticultural Plants
- Grounds Maintenance
- Plant use & Identification
- Pest & Disease Identification & Control
- Turf Management
- Plant Propagation
- Plant & Soil Science
- Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course.

You will continue to develop these skills and will work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.

How will this course be delivered?

You will be required to spend three days per week in College and one day at work placement.

What qualifications will I get?

Diploma in Horticulture (QCF)

How will I be assessed?

Continuous assessment is undertaken throughout the course through practical and theory-based assessments as well as written assignments.

How do I get a place on the course?

You will need to attend an interview.

What are the entry requirements?

Two GCSE passes at grade E/2 or above

An interest in gardening and related subjects

Someone who enjoys practical work and likes working outside in all weathers

A successful interview.

What else do I need to know?

You will need to provide steel toe capped safety boots and purchase College T-shirts and sweatshirts. You will also have to pay for various trips throughout the year.

Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.

If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.

What can I do after this course?

You can progress to the national award - this qualification will enable you to gain employment in the horticultural industry and allow progression to a Level 3 course.
