This coure is suitable for students who enjoy sport but who don't want to specialise in one area. You will need to have an enthusiasm for sport, both theoretically and practically, and an interest in the broader aspects of sports and leisure. The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge to apply what they learn in theory based lessons to a practical setting.
This is a one year course equivalent to 1 A-Level initially. There is the option to top up onto a second year Level 3 Diploma Sport equivalent to 2 A-Levels.
On the course you will study the following units:
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Physiology for sport
- Fitness testing for sport
- Current issues in sport
- Assessing Risk, Coaching and Practical Team Sport.
You will be given the opportunity to resit your English and Maths GCSE if you did not achieve a Grade C in school.
Upon successful completion of this course you have the opportunity to top up your qualification to achieve a Diploma in Sport which is the equivalent to 2 A-Levels.
Lessons will be both practical based and theory based. This will allow you to develop a range of skills and put them into practice in a sports setting.
Please note: For September 2017 all current BTEC qualifications are being revised and some content may change.
The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is 100% coursework based and will require you to complete a portfolio of work. There are no exams, however you mya have controlled assessments throughout the year.
Assignments are submitted for marking regularly throughout the course, which are marked by tutors who give regular feedback regarding your strengths and areas to improve for future assignments.
Assignments range from written assessments, presentations and observations, to designing posters and leaflets.
You will be invited to an information evening for sport upon application. Places are offered by interview and a successful reference.
4 GCSE grades at C/4 or above or equivalent.
You will need to purchase the Solihull College Sports Uniform (£70). Financial support is available to students who may need help with funds.
Independent study/research is a vital part of further education and your timetable will provide you free time to enable you to carry this out and complete assignments.
You may be invited to attend trips to a variety of places across the UK to support your education and experience. These are only offered to students as a reward for continued hard work and excellent attendance.
Student Ambassador and Sports Ambassador awards are offered to students who have shown excellent work ethic and commitment to their studies alongside competing at a high level in their sport. Benefits to this include free gym membership, access to strength and condition advice, personal trainer help and guidance and much more.
In addition to completing your BTEC course, you will also be developing employability skills that are valued and recognised by employers. Careers advice and guidance on applying to University will be on offer to you throughout the year, helping guide you towards your next step.
Advice will also be given to students during tutorials regarding extra qualifications and voluntary experiences that are on offer outside of college to increase employment skills.
Upon successful completion of year 1, you have the opportunity to top up your qualification to achieve a Diploma in Sport which is the equivalent to 2 A-Levels. This will provide you with UCAS points enabling you to apply for Higher Education.
Previous students have secured positions at Sports Centres, Leisure Centres and Sports clubs, including coaching positions in a variety of sports ater gaining additional qualifications beyond this course (e.g. FA Level 1)
