Where will this course lead?
This course is for candidates who want to work in the health and fitness industry. You will develop the knowledge and skills for working as a Fitness Instructor, along with a range of industry specific qualifications which will enhance your employability options.
What will I study?
Anatomy and Physiology
Principles of Exercise and Fitness
Planning, instructing, and evaluating gym based exercise sessions.
Planning, instructing, and evaluating group exercise sessions.
Principles of Nutrition and Healthy Eating
Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and knowledge of working in the Health and Fitness industry
Health, Safety, and Welfare in the Fitness Environment
Customer Service
Career and Personal Development
How will this course be delivered?
Approximately half of the course is delivered in the classroom to ensure a good theoretical knowledge and understanding across all of the units. The remaining part of the course is spent in the college's well equipped gym and studio exploring the techniques for both gym based and group exercise sessions.
What qualifications will I get?
Diploma in Health, Fitness and Exercise Instruction (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
Multiple choice exam papers.
A portfolio of written gym plans for a variety of exercise sessions.
Observation of instructing skills in the gym and studio environment.
Worksheets and Case Studies.
How do I get a place on the course?
Applications should be made via the College Call Centre or College website. You will then be invited in for an Open Evening and Interview.
What are the entry requirements?
GCSE's in Maths, English and Science at grade D or above are desirable.
Applicants should be undertaking gym based exercise on a regular basis (minimum 3 times per week). You will require a basic knowledge of exercises covering cardiovascular machines, fixed resistance machines, and free weights.
Good communication skills are essential.
Applicants must be 17 years old to join the course.
All applicants are required to complete a 3 week induction in September 2011 to assess their suitability for the course. This assessment will be based on the criteria outlined above.

What else do I need to know?
During the 3 week induction in September 2011, all applicants will be given the opportunity to complete the CYQ Level 1 Award in Fitness and Physical Activity qualification as part of their induction. Applicants must successfully complete this qualification and the other induction activities before they will be considered for progression on to the remainder of the course.
Successful applicants will be required to purchase course manuals and college uniform. The uniform is worn when in college. Successful applicants are also expected to provide appropriate exercise clothing to wear in the gym.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
You will be able to begin working as a Fitness Instructor in the health and fitness environment.
You will be able to study towards additional exercise and fitness qualifications to improve your teaching skills and employability options, e.g. Personal Training.
