Where will this course lead?
This course is for candidates who wish to further their career in the health and fitness industry. You will be a qualified Level 2 Gym Instructor and ideally already have experience of working as a Fitness Instructor. Candidates will develop the knowledge and skills for working as a Personal Trainer.
What will I study?
Anatomy and Physiology for exercise and health.
Programming exercise for a range of different clients.
Instructing exercise for a range of different clients.
Fitness Testing and Assessment.
Principles of Nutrition as part of a physical activity programme.
Health, Safety, and Welfare in the Fitness Environment
Worksheets.
How will this course be delivered?
Approximately half of the course is delivered in the classroom to ensure a good theoretical understanding of anatomy and physiology, exercise and fitness, programming exercise for participants, and nutrition. The remaining part of the course is spent in the college's well equipped gym exploring the training techniques and instructing skills required by a Personal Trainer.
What qualifications will I get?
Certificate in Personal Training (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
Multiple choice exam papers.
A portfolio of written gym plans over a 12 week period.
Delivery of a 12 week training plan in a range of environments.
Observation of a Personal Training session with a client.
Observation of a range of fitness tests with a client.
A nutritional consultation and action plan.
How do I get a place on the course?
Applications should be made via the Exercise and Fitness Application Pack available from the College Call Centre. You will then be invited in for an interview and screening test for the course you have chosen.
What are the entry requirements?
Applicants MUST have a Level 2 Fitness Instructing (GYM) Qualification.
Applicants will be exercising in a gym environment on a regular basis - a good knowledge of cardiovascular machines, fixed resistance machines, and free weights is essential to join the course. This will be assessed at the start of the course.
Excellent communication skills are essential.
Applicants will ideally have experience of working as a Fitness Instructor on a paid or voluntary basis.
Applicants must be 18 years old to join the course.

What else do I need to know?
Successful applicants will be required to purchase course manuals and a polo shirt. The polo shirt is worn as uniform when in college. Successful applicants are also expected to provide appropriate exercise clothing to wear in the gym.

What can I do after this course?
You will be able to begin working as a Personal Trainer in the health and fitness environment.
You will be able to study towards additional exercise and fitness qualifications to improve your teaching skills and employability options, e.g. Circuit Training, Studio Resistance.
