Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you interested in working in the gardening industry. Careers are vast from retail, arboriculture, grounds maintenance, garden designer, hard landscaper, plant researcher, plant grower, sports turf and greenkeeping. Whilst at College you will be working in a very pleasant walled garden, new classrooms and a purpose built barn where students can work regardless of the weather.
What will I study?
This course will cover
Health and Safety
Working in a Team
Plant Identification
Plant Pests and Diseases
Prepare Ground and Plant
Maintain Plants
You will also complete core units in Personal and Social Development which may involve practical voluntary work as well as setting up an enterprise such as growing and selling plants.
Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and will work towards a qualification at Level
How will this course be delivered?
You will spend three days per week in College and one day at a horticultural related work placement.
What qualifications will I get?
Certificate in Land-based Studies (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed by on-line and practical tests.
How do I get a place on the course?
You will need to attend an interview.
What are the entry requirements?
An interest in gardening and related subjects
Someone who enjoys practical work and likes working outside in all weathers
A successful interview

What else do I need to know?
You will need to provide steel toe capped safety boots and purchase College T-shirts and sweatshirts.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
If you are successful on this course, you will be able to continue studying towards a Level 2 First Diploma in Horticulture or Horticultural Level 2 Work-based Apprenticeship. For the Apprenticeship you will need to be in employment for approximately 30 hours per week, this can be discussed at your interview.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
There will also be various trips throughout the year.
