Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you wish to follow a career in machining or maintenance engineering. Successful completion of the course could lead to an apprenticeship with an engineering employer or further courses at Level 2 and above including Degree level.
What will I study?
The main topics to be studied will include:
Working Safely in an engineering environment
Developing skills in the planning and manufacture of mechanical and electrical components including bench work and lathes
Routine servicing of mechanical equipment
Working in teams
Producing and reading of engineering drawings
Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
Half of this course involves practical assignments in both the mechanical and electrical workshops and the other half is in the classroom. The mechanical and electrical facilities consist of standard hand tools, lathes, milling machines, Pillar drills, wiring bays and electrical circuit assembly and soldering bays.
What qualifications will I get?
Diploma in Engineering (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will need to complete both the practical and written assignments set by the tutors. There are no exams as part of the course.
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interview and a screening test.
What are the entry requirements?
Minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade E or above to include Maths and English, a suitable reference and a successful interview.

What can I do after this course?
If you are successful on this course, you will be able to continue studying towards level 2 in Mechanical, Electrical or Aerospace Engineering or possibly secure an apprenticeship with and engineering company
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will need to provide overalls and safety footwear as well as pens, paper and a scientific calculator.
