Where will this course lead?
This course will provide you with a recognised GCSE qualification in English. There are various opportunities for progression once you have completed this course depending on whether you wish to improve your employability or progress onto other courses. It will provide you with more confidence and skill in reading, writing and presenting your ideas orally.
What will I study?
How to produce non-fiction texts by writing clearly, effectively and imaginatively e.g. a letter, speech or article. This will provide the basis for the final examination.
How to present a variety of topics through Speaking and Listening activities delivered individually and in groups.
Reading and responding to texts, focusing on how to write about a text.
Creative writing where you will be required to produce your own short story or article.
You will also be asked to investigate how we use spoken language in different situations.
How will this course be delivered?
The course is delivered through a two hour taught session each week. You should also be prepared to attend 3 Controlled Assessment sessions of 3 hours each in addition to the taught sessions.
There will also be a requirement for students to commit to a minimum of two hours private study per week.
What qualifications will I get?
GCSE in English Language
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will need to:
Complete a 2 hour written examination at the end of the course.
Produce 4 pieces of assessed written work under Controlled Assessment conditions.
Complete three Speaking and Listening activities.
How do I get a place on the course?
Once you have contacted the college and left your name and contact details, you will receive a letter asking you to attend an introductory talk on the course followed by a diagnostic test. A place on the course will only be offered to applicants who have successfully completed the diagnostic assessment.
What are the entry requirements?
All applicants will be offered a place on successful completion of a diagnostic assessment. We do advise that to take the diagnostic assessment applicants need to be able to communicate competently in speech and writing before starting the course. This course is not a basic course in English but intended to follow the national curriculum for Secondary Education in English Language.

GCSE English is an entry requirement to a large range of courses and employment
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
Students will require an A4 pad of writing paper and pens for all classes.
