Where will this course lead?
A Level English Language & Literature is an excellent choice for entry into teaching, law, business management, media, journalism, dentistry and medicine.
What will I study?
AS level:
An introduction to the study of language and literature using a short anthology of literary and non-literary texts
A coursework unit based on two set texts: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
A2 level:
Talk in life and literature
Transformation of two literary works into different genres
How will this course be delivered?
After an introduction to the course, you will concentrate on the coursework unit in the first term, developing your own reading and writing skills. Once the coursework is completed, then you will concentrate on studying a range of texts from the anthology in preparation for the final exam.
In the second year coursework unit, you choose two literary works from a selection of authors and transform them into different genres. For the examined unit you study spoken language in real life situations and in plays (including one by Shakespeare).

GCE AS Level in English Language and Literature B
How will I be assessed?
AS - Assessment will be by a written examination of 1 hour and 30 minutes (open book) and a two-part coursework assignment.
A2 - Assessment is by a written examination of 2 hours and 30 minutes and by a two-part coursework assignment.
How do I get a place on the course?
A level programme application and interview.
What are the entry requirements?
A-Levels are part of a 2 year full time programme which will require 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, generally from national Curriculum subjects and normally including both English and Mathematics and an average point score of 5. Also a successful interview where we will require current academic references and reports.
Subject specific requirements for English language and Literature include GCSE Grade C or above in English. (also GCSE English Literature would be desirable)
What else do I need to know?
You will be required to attend four lessons a week, 5 hours in total and also complete a minimum of four hours a week self-study. The purchase of core text books to support your studies will also be required.

What can I do after this course?
A Level English Language & Literature provides a good base for a wide range of degree programmes and is a well recognised qualification for entry into a variety of jobs or training schemes.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
Students will be required to purchase recommended text book(s).
All students will be required to make set contributions towards educational trips and/or travel expenses to local universities for master classes.
