Where will this course lead?
The programme is designed for staff such as teaching assistants and learning mentors who support learning in primary, secondary and further education settings. It is a two year part-time programme which combines academic study with workplace experience through a series of tasks and projects linked to your current work.
Having completed this course participants may wish to progress to a full degree level qualification, to undertake further study and training to achieve Qualified Teacher Status and in some cases to postgraduate study. Students graduating from the course have found numerous and widened opportunities for career progression in learning support roles and in other educational careers opened up to them by their degree. Many students take the Foundation Degree as part of their route into teaching.
What will I study?
Comprising 14 modules of study, the course addresses issues such as equality and diversity in education; how people learn; and how to support effectively different types of learners. There are specific modules on supporting the development of literacy and numeracy skills and a module on behaviour management. In the second year of the course staff will support you in developing a small research project linked to an aspect of your own practice.
Year One modules:
Developing Skills for Learning; Understanding How Children Learn and develop; Supporting Literacy; Supporting Numeracy; Developing Your Role as a Teaching Assistant; Developing Professional Practice; Implementing the Learning Cycle
Year Two modules:
Research Methods in Education; Understanding Diversity; Supporting Inclusion; Supporting ICT; Literacy Across the Curriculum; Action Research Project; Managing Behaviour
How will this course be delivered?
Modules will be delivered during sessions at College, which will cover underpinning theory related to learning. Learners will also use workplace activities as a basis for learning, carrying out assignment tasks and projects in the workplace. You will also be accessing on line learning materials.
The college day for 2012 entrants is Tuesday from 4.00 - 9.00 pm.

How will I be assessed?
The course is not assessed by exam instead you will be assessed via a mixture of assignments and projects which are set for each module. All assignments involve activities and projects carried out in the workplace
How do I get a place on the course?
As this course is validated by Oxford Brookes University all applications will go directly to Oxford Brookes University via UCAS and then they will be forwarded to Solihull College. In order to attend Solihull College you will need to use the following UCAS codes: Institution code:066 and Course code:X222. A successful interview is required to join this course.

What are the entry requirements?
Applicants should usually have a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience and a current relevant role in a school/college. Applicants under 21 will also need a minimum of 1 subject at 'A' level or equivalent.
All students need to be able to demonstrate competency in English and Maths, possess suitable references and have a successful College interview.

What else do I need to know?
You will need a reference from your line manager/employer, who should be committed to supporting you in carrying out work based assignment activities. Course fees are £6000 per year.

Remember, you don't have to pay your tuition fees upfront, you can choose to repay your fees after you graduate by taking a fee loan. UK students with household incomes below £25,000 are entitled to a grant of up to £3,250 towards living costs, as well as a living cost loan. Students from households with incomes between £25,000 and £42,000 will be entitled to a partial grant. Grants do not have to be paid back.

What can I do after this course?
You can top up the Foundation degree to a full honours degree by part time study at a range of Higher Education institutions (Oxford Brookes and local universities). The Foundation Degree is a qualification in its own right but can also be used as part of a route into teaching in primary schools. Students have been accepted onto the Registered Teacher Programme after completing this course and onto the Graduate Teacher Programme after taking a top up degree.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course. You will also need to provide text books.
