How will this course be delivered?
This is a one-year part time* programme commencing in late September every year at Blossomfield Campus. (*One day plus one evening per week)
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC HNC Diploma in Computing and Systems Development (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
Students are mainly assessed by a combination of coursework, on-line exams and written exams depending on the module requirements. The majority of the assessment is individual; however there are opportunities within some modules for group activities.
How do I get a place on the course?
All applications should be made directly to the College: http://www.solihull.ac.uk/application_form-26841.html. The relevant course tutor interviews all students before being accepting on the programme, being part of the Institution's policy. In assessing such applications, consideration will be given to the applicant's ability to successfully complete a course, the nature of any additional support that may be required and how it may be provided.
What are the entry requirements?
Applicants need to be educated to 'A level' standard or to have successfully completed an equivalent qualification at level three. Computing Studies though not a requirement would certainly help with your studies. An interview is required in all cases.
Mature students, who do not meet these academic qualifications, will have relevant work or life experience taken into consideration.
All students need to be able to demonstrate competency in English and Maths, possess suitable references and have a successful College interview.
If you have a learning difficulty or disability, please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview and if you need help completing your application we can help with this too.
What else do I need to know?
Throughout the program you will undertake a Personal Development Plan (PDP) to track your progress through the course.
This course offers the learner the opportunity to work towards the CISCO CCENT (Cisco Certified Entry) vendor specific qualification within their program of study. Other specialised qualifications may also be studied, such as MCTS, MCAS (Microsoft Certified Technology / Application Specialist). Some of the content of these modules is covered in the HNC program and are supported by e-learning.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
Direct progression onto stage 5 - HND in Computing and Systems Development via Edexcel is the most logical pathway.
Progression on to a Degree or Foundation Degree course within computing or related subject is accepted at many Universities. To progress directly to stage 2 of the Honours Degree course in a Networking related discipline at a University, a student must normally have gained a HNC in Computing and Systems Development including passing all modules with at least a merit. Students who do not reach the standards described above but who have gained a HNC may be eligible to join stage 1 of an Honours Degree or Foundation Degree course.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
International students should apply direct to the College's Centre for International Studies. In respect of some of the additionality modules, there may be costs for learning materials, assessment fees and in some instances tuition fees.
