Where will this course lead?
This course provides an ideal progression route onto an Animal Management degree course, or employment in welfare organisations, zoos, farm parks or work in central and local government departments doing research and teaching. Graduates often progress to careers in education, scientific research, veterinary or business sectors, conservation and media.
What will I study?
This course provides an education foundation for a range of careers in the management and welfare of animals.
Modules include:
Animal Husbandry
Health and Welfare
Animal Nutrition
Business Environment
Anatomy and Physiology
Animal Nursing
Fish, Game and Wildlife Management
Research Project
Students must also undertake animal related work experience, either through current employment or a placement for at least 2 days a week.
How will this course be delivered?
The course is delivered in a variety of ways to include classroom work, research projects, trips with associated practical work and an Industrial placement. Students are also required to complete extensive independent study. The land-based centre is fully equipped to industry standards and houses a wide range of species to include reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, fish, small mammals, large farm mammals and birds.
HNC students will be expected to attend college one day a week - for the academic year 2012-13 this will be a Tuesday throughout the year.

BTEC HNC Diploma in Animal Management (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will be required to complete a range of written assessments in a variety of formats, written examinations, practical work with assessments and completion of an Industrial Placement.

What are the entry requirements?
You should have successfully completed an Extended Diploma or Diploma in Animal Care with a minimum of a Merit Pass profile or two A levels or two AS levels in a science related subject. A GNVQ/NVQ Level 3 in an animal related subject will also be accepted. All applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English, Maths and Science or equivalents.
Mature students, who do not meet these academic qualifications, will have relevant work or life experience taken into consideration.
All students need to be able to demonstrate competency in English and Maths, possess suitable references and have a successful College interview.
Applicants who do not currently have GCSE or equivalent qualifications in English and Maths can be offered the opportunity to take part in a 3 week summer school to gain these.
What else do I need to know?
Students will be required to purchase practical uniform and steel-toe capped boots for use if they work in the Animal Care Centre. Attendance on a variety of trips is a compulsory part of the course and students will be required to pay the associated fees. Some students may be required to pass a CRB check for particular Industrial Placements.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
Following successful completion of the HNC students can progress to other HE study including top up degrees at various institutions throughout the country or enter employment.
