Where will this course lead?
This course provides an ideal progression route onto an Animal Management degree course, or employment in welfare organisations, zoos, farm parks or work in central and local government departments doing research and teaching. Graduates often progress to careers in education, scientific research, veterinary or business sectors, conservation and media.
What will I study?
This course provides an education foundation for a range of careers in the management and welfare of animals. Modules include
Animal Husbandry, Health and Welfare
Animal Nutrition
Land-Based industry experience
Biological principles
Anatomy and Physiology
Fish, Game and Wildlife Management
Research project
Animal Behaviour and Training
Animal adaptations
Animal Nursing
Students must also undertake animal related work experience, either through current employment or a placement for at least one day a week, and by working with the animals in the Animal Care Centre at the college. The work placement day with be a Wednesday for the academic year 2012-13.
How will this course be delivered?
The course is delivered in a variety of ways to include classroom work, research projects, practical work in the Animal Care Centre, trips with associated practical work and an Industrial placement. Students are also required to complete extensive independent study. The land-based centre is fully equipped to industry standards and houses a wide range of species to include reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, fish, small mammals, large farm animals and birds.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC HND Diploma in Animal Management (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will be required to complete a range of written assessments in a variety of forms, written examinations, practical work with assessments and completion of an Industrial Placement.
How do I get a place on the course?
To start the application process you will need to register with UCAS via the UCAS website (www.ucas.co.uk) and you will need to use the following UCAS codes on your application: Institution code: S26 and Course code:023D. Places are offered by interview.
What are the entry requirements?
You should have successfully completed an Extended Diploma or Diploma in Animal Care with a minimum of a Merit Pass or two A levels or two AS levels in a science related subject. A GNVQ/NVQ Level 3 in an animal related subject will also be accepted. All applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English, Maths and Science or equivalents.
Mature students, who do not meet these academic qualifications, will have relevant work or life experience taken into consideration.
All students need to be able to demonstrate competency in English and Maths, possess suitable references and have a successful College interview.
Applicants who do not currently have GCSE or equivalent qualifications in English and Maths can be offered the opportunity to take part in a 3 week summer school to gain these.
What else do I need to know?
You will need to provide a pair of steel toe cap boots, purchase a college boiler suit and a work placement polo shirt. Attendance on a variety of trips is a compulsory part of the course and students will be required to pay the associated fees. There will also be costs involved with producing assignment work. Some students may be required to pass a CRB check for particular Industrial Placements.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
Following successful completion of the HND you can progress onto a one year top up degree at various instructions throughout the country or enter employment.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
There will also be various trips throughout the year.
