Where will this course lead?
This course is particularly suitable for you if you are interested in studying applied biology or related subjects at university or wish to succeed in employment in biologically-based industries.
What will I study?
This course provides an education foundation for a range of careers in biological/biomedical sciences
There are sixteen modules in total which cover theory and practice in a variety of disciplines like:
Cell Biology
Biochemistry
Physiology of Cellular Systems
Laboratory Techniques
Analysis of Scientific Data
Medical Microbiology
Chemistry
Investigative Research Project
How will this course be delivered?
Study period will be over two years (day and times to be confirmed). The course is delivered in a variety of ways to include classroom theory, research projects and practical work in the laboratory. Students are also required to complete extensive independent study.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC HND Diploma in Applied Biology (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will be required to complete a range of written assessments in a variety of forms, written examinations, practical work with assessments and presentations.
How do I get a place on the course?
To start the application process you will need to register with UCAS via the UCAS website (www.ucas.co.uk) and you will need to use the following UCAS codes on your application: Institution code: S26 and Course code:011C. Places are offered by interview and entry test.
What are the entry requirements?
You should have successfully completed either a National Diploma or Extended Diploma in Applied Science with a minimum of MMM or one A level or two AS levels in a science related subject. A Level 3 Access to H.E Science certificate or NVQ Level 3 in science related subjects will also be accepted. All applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above to include English, Maths and Science or equivalents.
Mature students, who do not meet these academic qualifications, will have relevant work or life experience taken into consideration.
All students need to be able to demonstrate competency in English and Maths, possess suitable references and have a successful College interview."

What else do I need to know?
You will need to complete assignments to set deadlines and undertake self-directed study. Attendance on a variety of trips is a compulsory part of the course and students will be required to pay the associated fees. Some students may be required to pass a CRB check for particular industrial employments.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
Following successful completion of the HND you can progress onto a degree course at various H.E. institutions throughout the country or enter employment.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
Textbooks will be recommended to purchase and/or research. There will also be various trips throughout the year.
