Where will this course lead?
Successful completion of the HND in Health and Social Care is equivalent of completing the first 2 years of a 3 year degree programme. It has a strong vocational element and you will be expected to either be working in Health and Social Care or undertaking substantial voluntary work. It is an industry standard qualification and will enable career progression within many Health and Social Care settings.
What will I study?
The HND top-up course is designed for people who already have the HNC in Health and Social Care. There is 1 core unit, Research Methods, in addition to 7 options which may include Anatomy and Physiology, Complementary Therapies, Sociology, depending on the sessions you attend.
How will this course be delivered?
The course has been designed with flexibility in mind. As a part-time student you will be offered twilight and evening sessions two nights a week. You must study 8 units to achieve the HND qualification. You can take the units over 1 or 2 years depending on your needs.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC HND Diploma in Health and Social Care (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
Each unit's assessment is matched to the content of the unit. Some units will be assessed by essay and assignments, others by on-line discussion groups and forum work. However, each unit can be assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction level, which are combined at the end of the qualification to give an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the qualification.
How do I get a place on the course?
Entry to the course is dependent upon successful interview and meeting the entry requirements.
What are the entry requirements?
You will be expected to have successfully completed the Level 3 in Health and Social Care in the last 5 years to at least a Merit standard.
Mature students, who do not meet these academic qualifications, will have relevant work or life experience taken into consideration.
All students need to be able to demonstrate competency in English and Maths, possess suitable references and have a successful College interview.

What else do I need to know?
You are expected to complete at least 200 hours of work based experience during the course. This can be in the form of paid or voluntary work. If you need help we may be able to help organise you a work placement.

Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
We have a wide selection of library books and electronic books for you to use for this course. There is no set text. You will be expected to supply your own stationery such as folders, paper and pens. Connection to the internet is expected, but facilities are available at College to do this if necessary.
