Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you would like to work with children in early years services, for example, Children's Centre Worker, Nursery Nurse, Private Nanny, Lead Practitioner, Childminder and are looking to develop your practice and progress to Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) or to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), then this is the course for you.
What will I study?
Over a two-year period a substantial amount of your learning will take place in the workplace through the planned and supported tasks and projects we will set you. You will undertake study in areas such as child development, communication, language and literacy, inclusion, health, and management issues in early years.
In addition you will gain practitioner status by successfully completing the professional practice modules through weekly work placement during the two years.
Year One
Unit 4 Early Years Curriculum, Play and Learning.
Unit 5 and Unit 3 Theories of Development: Birth to Three and Three Plus.
Unit 7 Understanding Children's behaviour.
Unit 9 Professional Practice.
Unit 14 Promoting Numeracy Skills.
Unit 15 Promoting Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
Unit 21 Concepts of Inclusiveness and the Early Years Environment.
Year Two
Unit 1 Continuing Development.
Unit 2 Communicating, Values and Leadership in an Early Years Environment.
Unit 6 Early Years Research and Project.
Unit 8 Child Protection.
Unit 13 Promoting Language Development.
Unit 12 Contemporary Issues in Child Health.
Unit 23 Managing the Early Years Curriculum.
Unit 10 Health Promotion for Early Years Practitioners
How will this course be delivered?
This course is college based with a work experience. You will be in college for 2 days per week and work practice 2 days per week
What qualifications will I get?
Higher National Diploma in Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families (Education)
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is via assignments, which take a variety of forms, written tasks, observations, child study, presentations and research projects. In addition you will need to pass your professional practice unit which comprises of 800 hours of assessed work practice with children aged 0-8.
How do I get a place on the course?
To start the application process you will need to register with UCAS via the UCAS website (www.ucas.co.uk) and you will need to use the following UCAS codes on your application: Institution code: S26 and Course code:093X. Places are offered by interview.
What are the entry requirements?
160 UCAS points, either A levels, Diploma or Extended Diploma or an appropriate level 3 qualification. Also required are four GCSE's at Grade C or above (to include English and Mathematics) if you intend to progress into primary school teaching you will be required to complete GCSE science at Grade C or above.
To undertake this course successfully you should have a full Criminal Records Bureau disclosure.
Mature students, who do not meet these academic qualifications, will have relevant work or life experience taken into consideration.
All students need to be able to demonstrate competency in English and Maths, possess suitable references and have a successful College interview.

What else do I need to know?
A successful interview is required to join this course. The duration of the course is 2 years. All applications are to be made through UCAS. All students working with children will need to have an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check; this may affect your application. Please discuss this with your interviewing tutor.

What can I do after this course?
On completion of the course, many students choose to gain employment. A growing number choose to complete a third year of study to gain a full honours degree. It is currently possible to join the long EPD training pathway for Early Years Professional Status when you complete your foundation degree, and to study for a BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies.
Some HND students, on completion of a third year, apply for the PGCE programme to gain Qualified Teacher Status. Opportunities for further study then exist at postgraduate level, for those who wish to progress further; this includes the MA Childhood Studies.
*If you wish to progress to Initial Teacher Training you must have Mathematics, English and a Science subject at GCSE Grade C or above.
If you wish to undertake Early years Professional Status must have English and Maths GCSE grade C or above
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.
You will also need to provide costs for text books and trips during the course. You should allow £150.00 to cover these costs and £60 for your Criminal Records Bureau check. There are optional overseas trips which are not accounted for in these costs
