Where will this course lead?

This course is ideal for you if you have an interest in a career in the Construction Industry but do not have any knowledge of the trade areas or what they offer.

What will I study?

Basic Carpentry Skills
Basic Bricklaying Skills
Basic Plastering Skills
Basic Plumbing Skills
Basic Painting & Decorating Skills
Employability Skills

Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.

How will this course be delivered?

The majority of this course is delivered in the Construction workshops, and involve practical assignments.
There is some underpinning knowledge to be learned, however, this is usually carried out in a practical setting.

What qualifications will I get?

Diploma in Basic Construction Skills

How will I be assessed?

To pass this course you will have to successfully complete all practical assignments.
All assessments are carried out by qualified assessors to the required qualification standard.

How do I get a place on the course?

Apply on line at www.solihull.ac.uk or at Student Services either at the Blossomfield Road or Woodlands Campus.

If successful, places are offered after interview and an assessment of your maths & englishwhich is carried out at the Construction Centre at Griffin Park.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum 2 GCSE's at Grade E or above
or
A BTEC or City & Guilds Construction Qualification

If you successfully pass this course you can apply to progress on to a L1 Diploma in the trade are that is best suited to your natural abilities.

Learners who have a high standard of attendance and have demonstrated a positive attitude can be recommended for any available apprenticeships.

Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?

You will be required to provide safety boots and appropriate clothes to wear in the workshop.
