Where will this course lead?
Successful completion will enable progression onto BTEC National Extended Diploma or Diploma in Construction at Level 3 or the Craft Certificate Level 2 in a specific construction trade.
The course will give you construction career awareness which may lead to jobs such as:-
Assistant Site Foreman, Trainee Surveyor, Trainee Engineer, Apprenticeships in trade areas such as Bricklayer, Carpenter and Joiner, Painter and Decorator
What will I study?
The course has 3 mandatory units:-
Structure of the Construction Industry
Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
Sustainability in the Construction Industry
You will also study a further 9 units covering construction trades from the following areas :-
Brickwork, Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Plastering, Plumbing
Maths and English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
You will spend half your time in the classroom and half in the workshop areas.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC Diploma in Construction (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will have to successfully complete all practical and theory assignments and practical.
How do I get a place on the course?
Apply on line at www.solihull.ac.uk or at Student Services either at the Blossomfield Road or Woodlands Campus.
If successful, places are offered after interview and a screening assessment which is carried out at the Construction Centre at Griffin Park.
What are the entry requirements?
Two GCSEs at grade D, including Maths, or Level 1 Vocational Qualification

What can I do after this course?
At the end of this course you will have a better understanding of the construction industry and which career path is most suited for your needs. You may wish to take a trade route from one of the areas you have studied. Depending on your skills you may be able to go directly onto Level 2 in your chosen trade area.
You could also take the professional route and study BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma at Level 3.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will be required to provide safety boots and appropriate clothes to wear in the workshop.
