Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you are interested in a career within the health sector whether this is nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy or paramedics. It will also help you if you wish to work within a care home or residential setting. It is a one year course.
What will I study?
The BTEC first course is made up of the following topics;
Diversity
Anatomy and Physiology
Communication
Individual rights/needs
Vocational experience
Human lifespan development
Creative and therapeutic activities
Maths, English (GCSE) and ICT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
This course is taught within the classroom where you will take part in tutor lead activities, presentations and group work. You will also be expected to complete 60 hours of placement experience within a variety of health care settings.
What qualifications will I get?
Diploma in Health and Social Care (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will be assessed via course work and practical assignments. There will be no external exams for this course.
How do I get a place on the course?
You will be invited in for a one to one interview with a member of the health and social care team. You will be expected to bring a reference from your form tutor at school/college and a recent copy of a report. You will be offered a place based on the success of this interview.
What are the entry requirements?
Four GCSEs at Grade D/E or above or Level 1 vocational qualification and suitable reference.

What else do I need to know?
This course is full time and you will be expected to attend 100% of the time. You will also be expected to attend your placement at all times.
You will be asked to complete an enhanced criminal records bureau check when you enrol on the course. This will be needed in order for you to attend placement.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
On completion of this course with a minimum of a merit, excellent attendance and punctuality, you will be allowed to progress onto the National Diploma level 3 course, following a successful interview. There is also the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship programme which could help lead to employment opportunities.
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will asked to pay some money towards your enhanced CRB check, your placement uniform and an annual trip.
