Where will this course lead?
This pre-apprenticeship programme is designed to equip you with the practical skills and knowledge needed to enter the engineering industry by combining the hands on Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations with the more theoretical Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Engineering
What will I study?
Health & Safety
Carrying out engineering activities effectively and efficiently
Using and communicating technical information
Making components using hand fitting techniques
Using lathes for turning operations
Using milling machines
Computer aided design
Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
Half of this course involves practical assessments in the engineering workshop and the other half is theory portfolio work in the classroom.
What qualifications will I get?
NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will complete:
A theory portfolio covering all 7 units
3 hand fitting practical assessments to a tolerance of +/- 0.25mm
3 lathe turning practical assessments to a tolerance of +/- 0.25mm
3 Milling practical assessments to a tolerance of +/- 0.25mm
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interview and a screening test.
What are the entry requirements?
Minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade D or above including Maths. Or successful completion of a relevant level 1 engineering programme, a suitable reference and a successful interview.

What else do I need to know?
If you are successful at the interview you will be expected to bring the following Personal Protective Equipment:
Safety footwear
Safety overalls for workshop activities
You will also be expected to bring your own writing equipment.

What can I do after this course?
On successful completion of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations and the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Engineering you will have completed a significant part of the Engineering Apprenticeship framework so will be in a good position to take up an engineering apprenticeship with a company or you could progress onto a relevant level three programme.
