Where will this course lead?
This course is ideal for you if you want a career in Health and Social Care. This course can lead to employment or university for further study. Many of our successful students go on to careers in Social work or the four fields of nursing which include: Adult, Learning Disability, Mental Health or Paediatrics.
This is an ideal course for those who wish to work in Health and Social Care environments, or those who wish to move on to study in Higher Education in the area of Health and Social Care.
What will I study?
You will study various topics the core units of study are listed below and optional units will be chosen for year 2

Equality and Diversity
Health and Safety
Development through life stages
Anatomy and physiology
Personal and professional development
Psychology and Sociology
Maths and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
The course will be delivered using practicals and taught sessions, guest speakers and educational visits as well as experience from your placements.
What qualifications will I get?
Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will be expected to meet deadlines for assignments for each topic area.
Assessment is via practicals, group work, presentations, essays and discussions. There are no external exams for the BTEC course but students will sit Maths exams.
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interview and a positive reference from your school.
What are the entry requirements?
Minimum 4 GCSEs at grade C or above or relevant Level 2 qualification @ Merit grade plus GCSE English @ grade C and reference.
If you have Learning Difficulty or Disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application we can help with this too.
What else do I need to know?
An enhanced CRB is essential for the course as this is required before you can complete placements. There is a placement polo shirt to be worn on placement which will be available to purchase from college.
You must be prepared to experience all placement opportunities.
Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
What can I do after this course?
If you are successful on the course you will be able to apply to universities or to seek employment, apprentice routes may also be an option or further study at level 4.
