Living the Olympic dream
The Olympics have come early for students at Solihull College. . .
The College has launched a six week scheme that will give students the chance to try their hand at a range of traditional Olympic games and train with a host of sports professionals - including the 2009 European Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion, Paul Gilmore.
The programme, called ‘Olympic Dreams’, has been organised by the College’s Student Liaison team and is made up of weekly free coaching sessions in fencing, archery, volleyball, boxing, taekwondo and wrestling.
Coaches from Solihull Fencing Club kicked off the scheme last week offering students lunch time lessons and earlier this week, Paul Gilmore – who also runs a martial arts club in Birmingham, dropped by to give them a class in combat.
Brett Rosenbaum from the College’s Student Liaison team who is coordinating Olympic Dreams said: “With the 2012 Olympic Games taking place so close to home, we want to see as many students as possible enjoying sport and keeping fit. This programme provides students from all backgrounds with the opportunity to try something new and I’d like to thank everybody who has helped put it together.”
Business student Umar Khan has been making the most of his spare time: “I’ve been to every session so far, it’s really fun trying out sports that I’ve never done before. I’ve really enjoyed meeting the professional coaches too, they are really good at what they do and have given me some useful tips.”
