Open events at Solihull College & University Centre
Tuesday, 14 February, 2017

7th and 8th of March will see the return of Solihull College & University Centre’s Open Events, giving school leavers and university level learners the chance to see the College’s campuses and meet with the tutors to enquire about courses for this coming September.

Those coming to the end of their school years will be able to experience a practical approach to choosing the right course for them with the ‘Try It’ open evenings at the recently Ofsted rated ‘Good’ College. Over thirty subject areas will be offering ‘have a go’ activities to young people, along with the chance to have a chat with teaching staff about the options available to them. Subject areas attending will include animal management, aerospace engineering, computing, motor vehicle, sport and many others. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the new state-of-art science facilities, virtual reality lab and aircraft hangar and simulators, which have all been developed and invested in recently, as well as find out about the College’s apprenticeship programmes.

John Callaghan, Principal comments: “The College has had a fantastic year where it achieved top marks for a HE Review, was subject to a Government Area Review which concluded that it was financially strong and resilient for the future and culminated in an Ofsted grade of ‘Good’ across all areas of the College in December 2016.

Our offer is a real alternative to academic routes and our provision is designed to give you the opportunity to get into employment or to progress to higher education and study at our University Centre or an alternate university of your choice.  We want to showcase our fantastic facilities to all prospective students who want to join us in September.  The Open Evenings are a fantastic way to inspire you with the courses we have to offer; try your hand at a variety of activities we have organised and meet the tutors. We look forward to welcoming students and their families at both our Blossomfield and Woodlands Campuses in March.”

With so many choices available, we hope to inspire and encourage those who may not be sure of their next step with our open events. Prospective students will have the opportunity to explore the fantastic facilities available to our students, get a real feel for what our courses involve as well as meet the staff who they’ll be working with whilst studying with us.”

In addition, the College will be holding an open event for university level courses alongside the school leaver event. The College works in partnership with a number of leading universities to deliver a range of higher education qualifications, these include Coventry University, Newman University, the University of Warwick and Oxford Brookes University, whom the College has recently received awards from for student satisfaction. The courses offered include HNCs, HNDs, Foundation Degrees, Top-Up’s, Bachelor Degrees and Masters Degrees.

Sue McGregor, Dean of Higher Education comments “The university-level open events are aimed at students who are coming to the end of their time at college or sixth form, as well as adults who would like to get back in to education as a means of career change or progression. We offer students the opportunity to earn a top degree locally, without the extra accommodation costs associated with moving away to university”.

Visitors are advised to check the College website for more details as some subjects are specific to either campus.
