Where will this course lead?
This course is for pre-service or in-service teachers who are new to teaching and training or those wishing to teach or train. It is designed as a qualification which will equip a wide range of teachers and facilitators with a threshold license to teach.
It is suitable for those who work or want to work as teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector; technicians and support staff in further and adult education; and training personnel in commerce, industry and the public sector
What will I study?
The course introduces you to the key principles of delivering learning, including:
- roles and responsibilities of the teacher
- planning and preparing sessions
- delivering learning activities
- assessment of learning.
How will this course be delivered?
The course is very active and participative, with opportunities for micro teaching with your peers (short teaching sessions) built into the programme.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
There are no examinations. Assessment is by a portfolio and a Learning Journal which are completed during the course.
How do I get a place on the course?
You will need to have an interview before joining the course
What are the entry requirements?
There is no formal entry requirement for the course and you do not have to be teaching or training already to join the course. However, teachers in the Lifelong learning sector are expected to have a Level 3 qualification in their own teaching subject and Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy.

What can I do after this course?
On successful completion of PTLLS you can move onto the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS), the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning (DTLLS), or a University Certificate in Education as appropriate. You will need teaching practice in order to progress onto these courses.
