Where will this course lead?
The HNC in Public Services is ideal for those wanting to develop knowledge, practical skills and experience required in the public services. The course focuses on academic skills, and relevant work experience required for today's public services sector. It is an ideal qualification if you want to develop, enhance and progress whilst working in the public services or if you want to progress onto further higher levels of study. Learning will take place within excellent facilities and the course will also benefit from the collaboration with the public services employers.
What will I study?
Modules:
Small-scale Research Projects in Public Services (15 Credits)
This module will enable individuals to develop, knowledge, understanding and skills in:
The sources available for the collection of information for public services
Using research strategies for small scale public service projects
The importance of ethical issues which should be considered that might impact on small scale research
Undertaking small scale projects
Fair Treatment in Public Services (15 Credits)
This module will enable individuals to develop, knowledge, understanding and skills in:
Identifying discriminatory behaviour
Identifying how legislation and organisational policies can support the protection of individuals
How fair treatment can benefit the work of public services
Organisation and Behaviour (15 Credits)
This module will enable individuals to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in:
The relationship between organisational structure and culture
The different approaches to management and leadership
Using motivational theories in organisations
The mechanisms for developing effective teamwork in organisations
Emergency Planning in the Public Services (20 Credits)
This module will enable individuals to develop, knowledge, understanding and skills in:
The role of the public services in planning for major emergency situations
The emergency planning system
The impact of emergency situations
The key elements of emergency plans
Developing a simulated disaster planning scenario
Work Based Experience (15 Credits)
This module will enable individuals to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in:
Negotiating industry experience
The specific requirements of the placement
Undertaking work experience as identified
Monitoring and evaluating their own performance and learning
Personal and Professional Development (15 Credits)
These modules will enable individuals to develop, knowledge, understanding and skills in:
How self-managed learning can enhance lifelong development
Taking responsibility for own personal and professional development
Implementing and continually reviewing their own personal and professional development plan
Demonstrating acquired interpersonal and transferable skills
Crime Reduction and Community Safety (15 Credits)
These modules will enable individuals to develop, knowledge, understanding and skills in:
The use of methods for recording crime
The current policies and strategies used by the public services to combat crime and improve community safety
The strategies for the reduction of anti-social behaviour
Understand the impact of interagency approaches in dealing with offenders
Understand the sociological effects of crime.
Justice and Punishment (15 Credits)
These modules will enable individuals to develop, knowledge, understanding and skills in:
Understand the composition and roles of the judicial system
Know how the judicial system is used for justice and punishment
Consider the ethical dilemmas surrounding sentencing.

What are the entry requirements?
Minimum qualifications are a current Level 3 qualification, GCSE or equivalent in English and a successful interview.
Mature students, who do not meet these academic qualifications, will have relevant work or life experience taken into consideration.
All students need to be able to demonstrate competency in English and Maths, possess suitable references and have a successful College interview.
